Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi Have Been Given 10 year Prison Sentenced in Cipher Case

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his former Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi have been sentenced to 10 years in prison over the cipher case, linked to the leaking of state secrets involving a diplomatic cable before the general elections on February 8. The court, operating under the Official Secrets Act, found Khan guilty of misusing a confidential document that he asserts proves a conspiracy behind his 2022 ousting. Khan maintains his innocence, citing the document as evidence of a plot orchestrated by his enemies and external forces. However, the US administration and Pakistani military have dismissed these claims. This sentence adds to Khan’s hardships, following a prior corruption conviction that bars him from election participation amidst a wider crackdown on his political party, PTI.

Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi were sentenced to 10 years in prison in the cipher case on Tuesday. The decision was made by Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain during a hearing at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Imran Khan’s political party, the PTI, called the case a “sham” and stated that there was no access to media or the public. The cipher case involves a piece of paper, claimed to be a diplomatic cable, that Khan waved at a public rally on March 27, 2022. He named the US and claimed it was evidence of an “international conspiracy” to topple his government.
